I’ve always loved Christmas lights, and when I was young there were few options. They were all incandescent bulb based, and other than the occasional clear string the majority were multicolored. Bulbs often burned out, they easily broke, and often one bulb out would kill an entire string.
We still have the same lights today, and they are useful in many environments, but we have many more options. LED lights are very common, and they are durable and use far less electricity. Different light shapes are also available, including popular star and snowflake shapes and dozens more as well. There are also far more colors available in various configurations, including multi color and single stand lights. My favorite single strand lights include white and clear as they are seen the furthest, as well as traditional green and red. Blue is extremely popular as well.
Commercial lights are not much more expensive than cheapies and far more durable. Our cheap lights might last a season or two outside, but commercial lights seen to last forever. The cords are thicker, the bulbs stronger, and they last almost forever – I’ve never seen one burn out. A lawnmower will however unfortunately kill them!
There are also ropelights, lights you suspend from your roof that look like icicles, lighted candycanes and far more.
For the adventurous with lots of lights, time, and money, there are also lots of light controllers available that can turn on and off your lights in patterns, including synchronized to music.
If you haven’t looked at Christmas lights recently, you’ll want too. There is simply so much variety available today, and at popular prices too!
